Congrats Dr. Larren! Not only have you created one of the neatest steel formulations to have ever existed, but you have undoubtedly influenced steel manufacturers to innovate in ways they probably never would have, now that you have proven that the give and take of toughness/wear resistance/ and corrosion resistance can be be tweaked to yeild results better than they should, if the formulation is just right. ^ probably the longest sentence ive ever written. 😂

I have long liked D2 and S30v. This past year I have gotten a couple of Spydercos with M4 and find that I really like that steel. Now I am eager to try K390!!

I am a complete innocent when it comes to metallurgy. I learned to use a lathe and mill for fun in college and someday I would like to do little metalworking in my garage as a hobby. I have a question: once a coupon is shaped and you are doing these tests and looking at the internal crystal structure, does working the steel (hammering, stretching, folding) have any effect on that structure? Again, sorry for being ignorant but I am very curious.

Any evidence the Damascus cutting effect happens when using two steels with different wear resistance? Say something like 1084 and 52100? Hardness won’t be different but wear might be different enough to show the effect. Then again, the difference between 1095 and pure nickel is greater than that of 1018 and 52100, so it might not be noticeable if the difference isn’t enormous.

When you have a material with randomly occuring defects - like every type of damascus (forge welding can never be completely defect free in a large area), toughness becomes depending of the material volume under test (Weibull distribution). If the test piece cut out of a sheet is - by chance - defect free, it may do well in testing. If there is a defect, it will fail early. So nobody knows if 1084/15N20 is a tough combo, or just picked a good part for testing.
